Biography
Nicole is a MSc student investigating the regulatory role of microRNAs contained within milk-derived extracellular vesicles (MEVs). Her research focuses on how maternal consumption of a high-fat diet may alter MEV composition and microRNA profiles, and how these changes could influence offspring health trajectories. She is particularly interested in exploring the potential application of MEVs and microRNA-mediated epigenetic mechanisms within a precision medicine framework.
During her undergraduate studies, Nicole worked as a research technician at the University of Winnipeg, where she extracted and screened bacteria for novel antibiotic compounds. This experience fostered a strong passion for research and motivated her to pursue graduate studies in the Wijenayake lab, with the goal of transitioning into a PhD program.
Outside of her academic work, Nicole enjoys spending time with her daughter and pug, as well as travelling, hiking, and cooking.
